"transcript": "I can get $5k for the 5090 and the Mac is $5499 before tax. \n\nThe 5090 has a memory bandwidth of 1.8 TB/s while the M5 Ultra is 1.2 TB/s.\n\nIs this a sensible upgrade? Primary use is coding.\n\n\n\n--- Top Comments ---\n\n\n[120 upvotes] Power play is to lease Mac studio 512gb for 2 years and change \n\n[67 upvotes] No. \n\n[64 upvotes] we're not going to know until we find out how good prefill is on the M5 Ultra, practically speaking. it will definitely be worse than the 5090, but whether or not it's slow enough to offset the huge bump in usable RAM for weights and kv remains to be seen.\n\nthe main problem with the 5090 is you still have to run partially lobotomized quants in order to really stretch its legs context-wise. 32GB really isn't enough for e.g. 27B. yeah you can run at Q4 and get blinding speed, but when you start to get up there in token count it starts to get really fucking stupid.\n\n[63 upvotes] I would only sell it to get 128 GB —nothing less than that\n\n[64 upvotes] As owner of a 5090 and 128gb Mac, absolutely not. Yes, a few models run that don’t on 5090, but only qwen next and a few 70b are worth it at all, and qwen next needs 128gb Mac with nothing else running at all. 5090 runs literally everything else so much better. And many things just don’t play nice on the Mac without cuda. It has gotten better, but I would not make the trade.",
