"transcript": "I find it a little crazy that only China and the USA are competing in the AI race. What happens to Europe in this? They just become further dependent on the us for defense?\n\n\n\n--- Top Comments ---\n\n\n[165 upvotes] Mistral (if you count it as competitive), elevenlabs for text2speech, and Black Forest for image generation are basically the only ones I know of \n\n[107 upvotes] The problem Europe has is that they allowed US firms so much access and let them buy all the startups and hire all the talents.\n\nDeepMind has HQ in London and about as many offices across European hubs as they do in US. But they are owned by Google.\n\nAnthropic and OpenAI also have about as many European offices as they have US ones.\n\nSo basically most European AI talents are working for US AI companies. Well unless US just bans them like they are doing to Anthropic with Fable. I guess it would really help European companies if US banned their top talents from working on frontier AI models.\n\nOutside of that Europe has just few AI companies Mistral, Elevenlabs, Black Forest Labs, DeepL are probably the most famous. But they aren't comparable to the frontier AI giants. They don't have the funding or infrastructure to compete on frontier general models.\n\n[35 upvotes] ASML is the only actual essential European company in the AI revolution \n\n[33 upvotes] EU doesn't have the financial market like the US to fund frontier lab level of capex (forget about openai, anthropic, even google/meta need to tap debt market to fund their capex, no company in Europe comes close to having the money making prowess as Mag 7 and European market simply can't / won't fund the type of capex needed) and doesn't have the culture of extreme grinding China has (the US isn't slouch either but meta is a retirement home comparing to big tech from China, smart people are not as rare as people think, at the very elite level, everyone is smart, you need shit load of hours and commitment to compete, just ask anyone doing anything at elite level, 35 hours a week just won't cut it no matter how \"smart\" you work)\n\nat EU salary for tech companies, especially for elite level talent, is not competitive even against China (again financial market is key cuz IPO is the key for founders/early engineers to get rewarded for taking the risk/putting in the hours)",
