"transcript": "A few years ago, this topic was all the rage and large numbers of this sub believed the claims, from posters like Jimmy Apples, that OpenAI had already built an AGI-level model internally but were holding back its release. What happened? \n\nI think it's fairly obvious that they did not achieve AGI internally. So, why are people still listening to the same people who made this claim?\n\n\n\n--- Top Comments ---\n\n\n[138 upvotes] There are no secret internal models. It doesn't make any economic sense and never did.\n\nThe issue is that the goalpost for \"AGI\" keeps moving. Right now it has moved so far that it might as well be equivalent to ASI. If you brought back GPT-4 from 2023 to 2015 and dropped it out of nowhere people would call it AGI.\n\nIf you brought Mythos back to 2023 right after GPT-4 came out people would call it AGI as well. However because the development is gradual people don't feel like a certain threshold has passed.\n\nAs for what Jimmy Apples meant. He meant reasoning models or \"test-time compute\" which can scale up. Essentially you have \"AGI\" because you can just make a model keep thinking for longer to get arbitrarily higher scores, which technically in some sense means AGI as long as you spend enough compute on the answer..\n\n[33 upvotes] If you can measure general intelligence, we can answer your question.\n\nYou can’t measure general intelligence. The debate of AGI is really just a debate on the definition of AGI.\n\n[24 upvotes] You mean just like the \"So dangerous new model that we can't release it\" aka GPT2",
