Up through GPT-5, I personally didn't feel like the threat to my job was *that* serious. But this time feels different. At this point, it seems almost inevitable that my job will be replaced and probably within the next one or two years.\n\nI honestly didn't expect LLMs to become this capable of freely operating and using software this quickly. It's genuinely unsettling.\n\nPeople talk a lot about \"adapting to the AI era,\" but at this point, I can't help wondering if that's basically like trying to stop a tsunami with a wooden plank.\n\nThere's also a lot of talk about retraining and reskilling. Maybe not yet today but soon. People seeing an advantage in harnesses or guardrails omit the part that the AI can write them themselves.\n\nBy being a early adopter you may have a year or two advantage which will quickly melt away. I don't see \"expert prompter\" as any kid of viable career. \n\nPeople witch exceptional intuition and judgment and taste will have a place because that's hard to be replaced by AI. To actually gauging 50/50 situations or immeasurable things. I mean for a while because I can't imagine who and how these services will be paid besides by the already rich people.\n\n[32 upvotes] I don't think society is even remotely ready for what is coming at us.\n\nI use this anecdote a lot, but I have old DALL-E images saved from 2022/2023 because they were so bad that I wanted to keep them around to see if the tech improved. \n\nWe've gone from that terrible quality on relatively simple tasks to the Hugging Face incident with 700 agents autonomously splitting themselves up into teams, agents taking leadership, whole \"departments\" set up, etc. It's a little mini-civilization in cyberspace. \n\nOutside of Reddit, dedicated AI newsletters, etc., very, very few people are even aware of how fundamentally things are changing, much less aware of the iteration.\n\nIt wasn't long ago - 2024 - that you could barely get frontier models to write a decent report. \n\nI've had a problem going with a small piece of software we use at my employer for a year and a half to two years. Users run a process in that software at certain times of the year. It was a weird deadlocking issue that could have also been security software going wild. I could prove that, but not much beyond it. The vendor tickets always got punted around with no real action taken. It's a small thing with an easy workaround, so\n\n[27 upvotes] Yes you are correct unfortunately. But, the silver lining is we are all in it together. As a software developer I feel exactly the same as you, my job is about to be obselete. But robots are about to hit the workforce, cabs are already self driving, AI diagnoses patients more accurately than doctors. \n\nIt will come for us all and within the next 3 years. There is good in this reality because if no one has a job then the rich cannot have buyers for their products and the economy collapses and therefore the government must step in and do something about it. \n\nNo point in fighting we just have to hang on as long as we can by being useful.\n\n[19 upvotes] I've been watching the AI engineers suggesting everyone start new businesses. What, we're all going to be vibe coding software that anyone else can copy? Start a dog walking website? Maybe we try to get patents on some new whiz-bang software? It's not easy or cheap.",
