  "transcript": "The reaction to OpenAI’s claimed Navier–Stokes solution reminds me of AlphaFold.\n\n\nProtein structure prediction used to be a major research specialty. For students it was often one PhD to get one protein.Then AlphaFold made high-quality predictions available to basically everyone for free.\n\n\nProtein scientists didn’t disappear. The bottleneck just moved from predicting the structure to understanding what it means.\n\n\nIf AI starts solving frontier math problems, maybe the same thing happens to mathematics. \n\nHuman value may shift toward judgment, verification, interpretation, and choosing problems... but AI may automate those too. The field could simply need fewer mathematicians for the same amount of output.\n\n\n\n--- Top Comments ---\n\n\n[1 upvotes] For today. You aren't aren't extrapolating even a year from now. Everyone is now saying \"Yeah, but we still need X to prompt the AI and read its output!\". Prompting is not harder than solving millennium problems or folding proteins or creating enterprise software. We are less than a year away from autonomous 24/7 AI researchers. And by that I mean them outperforming all human researchers. Already people have autonomous researchers, they just are still kinda jank. But at the rate of AI improvement, that jank will be gone by the next model gen and they will be viable, and then the gen after that nearly all the cognitive bits of science will be done by AI. Robotics is slower, so scientists will soon just be the hands in the lab for the lab AI that prints instructions for them, and then they return the results to the AI.\n\n[1 upvotes] Let me tell you one thing youre missing. Alphafold came at a time where we were not yet in a massive spiral! So naturally it didnt just kill a profession. With current ongoing processes its mostly that we are gobbling up all professions that do anything at a desk or laptop so to say. So even interpretation and application kayers are being „substituted“ as we speak.   \nNot saying theres nothing left especially rn. But in your analogy you underestimate the pacing as we stand vs when alphafold was released\n\n[1 upvotes] I agree, for the near-term at least. There was a stretch where humans playing with the aid of chess engines produced the highest-quality games. Then of course the engines got so strong that humans couldn't add much. That may be the case here. But of course real-world problems don't map directly to chess so we'll have to see.\n\n[1 upvotes] Alpha Fold ended up becoming another tool. Nobody complains about using AI as a tool.  \nIn fact many academics already encourage using AI as a tool. But A tool still under control by a driver.\n\nThe problem is the way the mathathon for example is designed it encourages people to just pressuring AI until they get an answer/proof. Noone is doing rigorous proof of a really novel problem in less than 2 days unless of course AI doing most of the cognitive workload (again cognitive, not technical) which is what is being criticize.\n\nAcademic research is basically read, think, read another one, compare, discuss, you can build harness around your workflow, but it would still be a process.",
