  "transcript": "Interesting watching this happen in real time and seeing the divergence in opinions.\n\nPeople who barely use AI beyond messing around with the free browser versions are suddenly completely confident that the whole thing is just marketing hype and that nothing meaningful is happening.\n\nThe people paying the least attention somehow seem the most certain.\n\nThe Hugging Face incident was one of the biggest warnings yet, and a lot of people are treating it like a nothing burger without really understanding what happened or why it matters.\n\nObviously there’s a ton of AI hype and bullshit out there. But watching people jump from “there’s too much hype” to “the entire thing is fake, PR for an IPO, or regulatory capture” is pretty wild.\n\nThere’s a reason people who actually work closely with this technology have been raising alarms for years, and many of them seem more concerned, not less, as the technology improves.\n\nFor $20 a month, we now have access to something that can outperform most humans at a growing number of cognitive tasks.\n\n\n\n--- Top Comments ---\n\n\n[82 upvotes] \"Don't Look Up\" was a metaphor for climate change, which is a scientific consensus.\n\nThere is no similar consensus regarding the possible outcomes of AI -- we know it will bring good things and bad things, but we don't know what will happen or when.\n\nIn that sense, it reminds me of Ted Chiang's \"Story of Your Life\".\n\n[42 upvotes] I don't fault either perspective. I completely understand that a lot of people could reasonably argue from pattern recognition that it is a nothing burger. We've lived through Y2K, Covid, war returning to Europe, decades of \"only 5 years left until runaway global warming\". It's probably the most responsible, level-headed people placing their bets that everything is actually probably fine and will continue as usual.\n\nOn the other hand, AI has accomplished some impressive feats and eerie developments. Outside of memory or physical bottlenecks, I think most people recognize the argument for exponential acceleration, and the existential risk.\n\nPersonally, AI has not affected my life or job at all, other than counting my daily macros slightly more efficiently, it's mostly dismissible. So.. I really don't know. It's still going to be significantly smarter than the average person in many ways\n\n[24 upvotes] Why do you assume that the people who are saying it's regulatory capture must be people who aren't paying attention? I'm in grad school focusing on machine learning, I use them extensively, and absolutely I believe the far greater concern is due to companies having complete control of models, or even the government having the same. I have extensive knowledge of them, not just generally how to use them, but how they work in the overall architecture and techniques of current models.\n\nThe HuggingFace is a great example. it wasn't \"The AI was too intelligent\", if you read the report, it is concerning because of how much OpenAI is slacking on watching their models. It was negligence, not superinteligence. They aren't even properly monitoring the monitors. That says nothing about the actual danger of the models to run off and do things without being told, and news flash, Salt Typhoon will have extremely good models, regardless of US laws. The HuggingFace showed OpenAI should be criminally responsible for negligence, not that no one else can run models responsibly.
